The Bad Side of Social Media
To Professor Campbell and fellow students
Introduction
Social Media is a newer topic of discussion within our generation and the impact that it can bring. The newer technologies have made it easier to access the way that we interact on social media. Social media has created the ability to communicate with people around the world, gain newer forms of work, showcase different talents and understand world wide situations. Even though social media can be seen to include and give us the benefits we should be aware of the negatives and potential issues and dangers in which many of us are blinded by.
Mental Illness: The Silent Side
Social Media can be associated with mental issues which can include but not limited to anxiety, stress, depression and low self-esteem. There has been countless research that has lead to many professionals the use of less social media especially among the younger generation. Different platforms have come to light that is the use of many people, popular platforms include Instagram, Youtube, Snapchat, Twitter, TikTok and Facebook.
With the use of social media, people's self-esteem has lower and has caused different mental illness. The act of taking a selfie is a action taken mostly due to social media that has caused the increase of someone's self-esteem. By posting that selfie, many people have created comments that can affect a person's well-being. Not only has comments have affected people, but the amount of likes a person can get will also create someone's self esteem to go down. With social media there has been awareness of the amount of likes someone gets and there is a comparison of who gets more likes than others. The use of pictures within social media has created the platform to cyber bullying affecting many people mentally and physically to some extent.
Last Thoughts
Overall, the use of social media can be beneficial but the negatives are overshadowed when speaking about it. There should be a more open conversation about the ways that social media has currently affected our youth and how we can address it. Mental illness and the dangers that social media can create has put many in danger and will continue to affect anyone that uses social media because of the lack of awareness this topic can have.
Final Question:
Do you think that the positives outweighs the negatives?
